Every once in a while we come across something in the telephone
collectors' world that gets us even more excited than usual,
and these telephones are certainly an exciting discovery.
While sorting through old stockpiles of ex-GPO equipment,
a number of 700 series telephone bodies were found that
were quite unlike any we had seen before. As far as our
knowledge goes, these bodies were never issued, although
they were authentic 100% original BT mouldings from the
700-series telephone era. Our further research has concluded
that BT was probably planning at some stage to modernise
its dial-phone range during the latter half of the seventies,
by introducing new colours for a more individual look. As
we all know, the late seventies saw BT move over to push-button
telephones and it is highly likely that plans to introduce
boldly coloured 746 telephones were shelved. Following liberalisation,
in the early 1980s, telephone manufacture was opened up
to new private entrants, and it was specialist customisation
companies like Swatch,
who eventually won the battle to offer more personalised
phones, by offering a huge variety of non-traditional colours
and styles. Without doubt, these telephones therefore mark
an important moment in telephone history. What is also particularly
interesting for us is that the colours seem to represent
the cusp between 70s and 80s styling, when bolder colours
gave way to preferences for lighter pastel shades. These
are the colours that in lighter shades are quintessential
pastel colours, yet in their darker hues are more reminiscent
of the 1970s. These working telephones are supplied as "Museum
Grade" telephones, with a mint appearance and brand
new handsets, bodies and cords. These phones
